As 2024 draws to a close, Google's Year in Search provides insights into topics that captured the attention of Malaysians throughout the year. According to Google, sports were a major highlight, with six of the top ten trending searches reflecting the country's enthusiasm for athletic events.

Sports played a significant role in uniting Malaysians. UEFA Euro 2024 emerged as the top search, with many Malaysians gathering at local spots such as mamak stalls to enjoy the events. Other notable sports events included the AFC Asian Cup and Copa América. During the Paris Olympics, Malaysian badminton players Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik secured bronze medals in doubles, and Lee Zii Jia achieved a bronze in singles. Additionally, Malaysian athletes won five medals in the Paralympics, adding to this year’s sporting achievements.

Interest in sports was reflected in searches for people, particularly athletes. National cyclist Azizulhasni Awang and badminton player Pearly Tan were among the most searched figures due to their Olympic performances. Political figures such as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris also captured attention amidst the US election campaigns.

Economic concerns and digital transformation were also significant. Malaysians, as reported by Google, prioritised financial assistance programs amidst rising costs of living, with Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah, a government cash assistance program, being the top news search. Digital educational and welfare platforms, such as DELIMa and MyKasih, gained attention as Malaysians sought to enhance education and support vulnerable communities.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continued its integration into daily life in Malaysia, driven by initiatives such as the National Artificial Intelligence Framework and the Digital Economy Blueprint. AI chatbots such as Gemini and creative tools such as Viggle AI and Vidu Studio often reflected this trend.

Entertainment also featured prominently. Movies such as Inside Out 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4 captured the interest of Malaysian audiences. On television, global dramas such as Queen of Tears resonated with viewers. Google also noted searches honoring public figures who passed away, including Liam Payne and Sarawak’s former Governor Taib Mahmud.
