Grab MY digitises Ramadan bazaars to support micro-entrepreneurs

Grab Malaysia has partnered with the governments of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to digitise Ramadan bazaars this year. According to Sean Goh, country head of Grab Malaysia, the company hopes to support micro-entrepreneurs and social sellers who usually participate in neighbourhood Ramadan bazaars or organise pop-up stores across the country. Grab will be using its GrabPay, GrabFood and GrabExpress services to help these merchants sell and deliver items directly to Malaysian homes, be it Ramadan favourites, cookies or Hari Raya outfits. Grab is also actively engaging with other state councils on the possibility of digitising their local Ramadan bazaar merchants to safeguard the income of micro-entrepreneurs.

Additionally, Grab has collaborated with restaurant partners to curate menus with Ramadan favourites like Ayam Percik, Murtabak and Roti John, which will be made available on its GrabFood app during the fasting month. The company is also encouraging social sellers and home-based micro-entrepreneurs in Malaysia to leverage on its network of more than 100,000 delivery partners to help them serve their online customers in a more convenient and efficient manner.

”We are inspired by the many social groups who are trying to help these micro-entrepreneurs and social sellers, and keeping the spirit of Ramadan alive. At times like this, we are humbled to be able to use our technology and platform so that Malaysians can still celebrate the fasting month in a safe, hygienic and socially-distanced manner. Together, we hope to work with other local councils and bring a new meaning and experience to Ramadan across Malaysia,” Goh said.

Last week, Grab launched new measures to help local businesses, namely providing financial relief of up to RM3,000 to each GrabFood small biz in the form of a rebate for every order, and launching a campaign to boost visibility and awareness for restaurants across various digital channel. Grab has also waived commission fees for its merchant by providing a customised GrabPay link so they can receive direct payments via chat, free of charge, for orders made via Whatsapp, Facebook or phone. Commission fees for GrabFood orders will also be waived if customers choose to pick up the food themselves. The measures come one week after Grab set up a protection fund to help partners who are either tested positive, or are required by MOH to self-quarantine. Under this fund, up to RM1,000 will be given to each driver or delivery-partner affected. Grab has also set up a relief fund, giving vouchers with value up to RM300 to its active partners to help with daily household expenses.
