With great power, comes great responsibility - and believe it or not, influencers have plenty.

This is especially with the increased scrutiny influencers in Malaysia are facing as government bodies press on the need for them to be mindful of what they say. Some even face legal action for some posts.

In February, Malaysian influencer Ryzal Ibrahim was reportedly fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court in Miri, Sarawak for disrespecting a traditional Iban garment.

Additionally, in March this year, Malaysia's minister of religious affairs Na'im Mokhtar reportedly advised social media personalities to use their influence for good and to avoid actions that could fuel prejudice.

However, that's not to say influencers in Malaysia still can't have their fair share of fun. After all, in an increasingly cluttered digital space, influencers do need to sometimes do drastic things to get eyeballs. In this series, A+M takes a look at some of the craziest things our local influencers have done to create content and to get views.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

Staging a series of photo shoots in public spaces with merchandise.

Despite being introverted, I pushed myself to interact with strangers and capture candid moments, adding an unexpected dynamic to my art.

Additionally, I experimented with unconventional locations such as rooftops and alleyways to add intrigue and spontaneity to the images. These moves pushed me out of my introverted shell and garnered attention for their authenticity and unique perspective while challenging societal norms of public expression.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

I'd consider creating interactive art installations in the future, where viewers could physically immerse themselves in a fantastical world of my creation. This could involve constructing elaborate sets, incorporating augmented reality elements, and inviting participants to engage with the artwork in unexpected ways.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

I would say the craziest thing we did was during Chinese New Year this year. I called all my influencer friends to go to this Mamak (Tamil) restaurant that is known to sell weird food combinations such as sirap Tom Yam (Tom Yam syrup drink) and nasi goreng sirap cheese (syrup and cheese fried rice).

We asked the waiter to mix all the weird food into a yee sang (salad dish).

We got lime, Indomee instant noodles, fish curry, poppadom (crispy flour cracker) and Vico powder and asked all our friends to lou sang (prosperity toss) and mix all the food together.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

The craziest thing I would do is travel to every single state in Malaysia on a bicycle. In some ways, I would like to do content that is also crazy challenging.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

I came up with the idea of making a Malaysian version of 'Salt Bae'.

Since I couldn't find a picture online of a waiter to photoshop doing the salt bae move, I got in my car and drove to the nearest Mamak (Tamil) restaurant.

I ordered roti canai (Indian flatbread) and iced milo, then asked the waiter to spread some Milo powder on top of my food and drink while posing like Salt Bae.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

The craziest thing I would do for views is probably join a Mr Beast
challenge. I would love to be in Squid Game, without the death. I probably wouldn’t be in it just for the money but more to be able to meet other creators and feel that sense of cohesion in our misery.

I do like to push the boundaries of what one considers crazy content but not at the expense of getting in legal trouble or getting hurt.
