Domino's Pizza Malaysia has jumped in on the fun around BBC Food's recent rice-rinsing gaffe by introducing a new way of cooking pizza. "Do you think Uncle Roger would approve?" the pizza chain said in a Facebook post, referring to Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng also known as Uncle Roger.
The Facebook post featured slices of pizza in a colander. The pizza chain also encouraged consumers to "just order Domino's if you don't know the right way to cook rice!", adding that delivery is free. And of course, who can forget the chilli flakes?
"If you [are] sad, put chilli flakes. If you [are] happy, put chilli flakes. If you [are] have pizza, put chilli flakes," it said. Done in collaboration with 16TWO, the post had 21k reactions, 3.2k comments and 16k shares at the time of writing. 16TWO's spokesperson told A+M that the post also had a reach of 3,005,836 at the time of writing. A+M has reached out to Domino's Pizza for comment.
Most netizens applauded Domino's Pizza for its engaging marketing efforts, adding that Uncle Roger would be terribly disappointed with the pizza chain's recommendation. One even said that Domino's , Shopee and GSCinemas are the "three horsemen of 'up-to-date' marketing.
It seems like jokes about rice-rinsing are not slowing down. Asian Food Network recently poked fun at BBC Food by releasing a short guide of do's and don'ts when it comes to cooking rice. Meanwhile, Shopee Malaysia also posted an ad with the caption: "Colanders are for rinsing the vegetables or other ingredients to fry your rice with, not to rinse the rice, especially not after you boil it." For the unaware, we have got you covered. BBC Food recently came under fire when its host Hersha Patel rinsed cooked rice with a colander in her recipe video for egg fried rice. Netizens have also referred to her cooking as a "crime against rice".
