Databricks enters Indonesia to transform data and AI for local enterprises

Databricks, a global leader in data and artificial intelligence (AI), is extending its operations to Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to the ASEAN region.

This expansion, set to launch in early 2025, will make the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform available via the Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region, the company said in a release.

The move comes as generative AI adoption accelerates in Indonesia, with organisations increasingly recognising the importance of data as a driver of innovation and competitiveness in the digital economy. Databricks has reported more than 70% annualised growth in ASEAN over the past three years, propelled by a surge in demand for data intelligence solutions.

It also aligns with Databricks' recent US$10 billion Series J funding, participated by the Qatar Investment Authority and new investors such as Temasek and Meta. With a valuation of US$62 billion, Databricks plans to utilise the funding for international expansion, new AI product development, and strategic acquisitions.

A US$5.25 billion credit facility led by major global banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs further underscores its financial strength.

Empowering Indonesian enterprises with AI and analytics

Already, hundreds of businesses across ASEAN, including Standard Chartered Bank, Ikano Retail (IKEA franchise), Maya, and Xendit, are leveraging the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to fuel digital transformation and operational efficiency. With its expansion to Indonesia, Databricks aims to empower more local enterprises to unlock the full potential of their data and AI capabilities.

The Databricks platform enables organisations to integrate their data with advanced AI models tailored to their unique business needs. Built on a lakehouse architecture, it combines open data formats with governance features to ensure customers retain full control over their data. Accessible through AWS Marketplace, the platform simplifies adoption and management for businesses seeking scalable, secure AI solutions.

Databricks’ expansion aligns with its strengthened partnership with AWS. Indonesian organisations will gain access to advanced capabilities, such as faster development of custom models using Databricks Mosaic AI on AWS Trainium chips. These tools allow businesses to pretrain, fine-tune, and deploy large language models at improved cost efficiency.

Kirsten Gilbertson, head for partner management, ASEAN at AWS, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting AWS's substantial IDR 71 trillion (US$4.4 billion) investment in its Jakarta region. "By building the Databricks platform exclusively on AWS in Indonesia, we are committed to helping customers securely manage data locally while driving digital and AI innovation tailored to industry needs,” she said.

Cecily Ng, VP and GM of ASEAN and Greater China at Databricks, added, “This expansion reflects our dedication to helping Indonesian enterprises harness the transformative power of advanced analytics and AI-driven insights, enabling them to thrive in the digital economy.”

With over 10,000 organisations worldwide already relying on its platform, including more than 60% of the Fortune 500, Databricks continues to drive innovation at the forefront of data and AI solutions.
