Comms ministry seek solutions to protect creative industry talents

The Communications Ministry is reportedly seeking solutions to streamline operations within the creative industry and enhance protection for its talents.

Speaking at a networking lunch session at the Techvolution 2024: Towards A Connected Future For Malaysia event, deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching reportedly emphasised the importance of developing new strategies to support the future of the creative industry.

This is especially considering the uncertain outlook confronting industry players today.

According to Bernama, Teo said that as a dynamic industry, talents in the creative economy work hard to prove their talent and worth to stay relevant.

Efforts to reform the creative industry, which coincides with Techvolution, is also a part of this idea, Teo reportedly added.

The deputy communications minister also reportedly commended Techvolution for its efforts in providing a platform for discussion and thought-provoking sessions too.

Techvolution has also provided a special stage to introduce The R&D Studio, a Malaysian award-winning creative content studio, Teo reportedly said.

Techvolution 2024 was hosted by SWAG Holdings. The event sought to offer an extensive conference encompassing trending topics in current technology landscapes, including electric vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), creative economy and globalisation.

This comes after fellow communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said last week that many of the country's creative industry players lack protection after they retire. He cited a famous composer, Roslan Ariffin Jamil (also known as Ross Ariffin) who became homeless after retirement.

“The case involving Ross Ariffin, who became homeless for three years, and wife to Pak Jabit (Man Kadir Samsi), who is living in poverty, has led to a discussion between me and human resources minister Steven Sim Chee Keong," said Fahmi in an X post.

In response, Fahmi provided Ross with assistance in getting a people's housing project house for him to shelter in.

"The communications ministry is looking for the best solution to get coverage for part-time media practitioners, film crews, music crews, and behind-the-scenes production crews," said Fahmi.

"God willing, the government will organize an awareness campaign about the importance of contributing to SOCSO through the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme."
