British rock group Coldplay is reportedly planning to perform at the soon-to-open Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong.

Coldplay's concerts will be among the significant events by international artists at Kai Tak Sports Park due to its 50,000-seat venue, while the ticket sales will kick off around the beginning of 2025, according to the South China Morning Post

Crowd management and dispersal are crucial components of the preparation for mega events, with a cross-departmental task force collaborating with transport stakeholders such as the MTR Corporation, according to the report.

Coldplay's last performance in Hong Kong was back in 2009 at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Chek Lap Kok. Last year, both Coldplay and American singer Taylor Swift, along with British band The 1975, excluded Hong Kong from their tour schedules.

Last Sunday (1 September), Hong Kong chief executive John Lee said on his Facebook page that many local and international event promotion organisations have plans to rent various facilities within the park, and a series of large-scale entertainment events will be held there.

“To showcase Kai Tak Sports Park to the world, a grand opening event will be held in the first quarter of next year. We look forward to featuring several local sports and arts stars who will perform a series of exciting acts on the world-class stage at the main stadium of Kai Tak Sports Park,” the post reads.

Lee added that he requested that the task force ensure the timely and smooth completion of Kai Tak Sports Park to strengthen Hong Kong's strategic positioning as a hub for major events.

The installation of the exterior panels at the Kai Tak Sports Park Main Stadium has been completed, it can hold holds 50,000 spectators and has a retractable roof and flexible pitch surface.

Meanwhile, the sports park is set to deliver mega-scale sports events and venues with advanced flexible facilities, for things such as the 15th National Games in 2025.
