Cigna Hong Kong has launched a free income protection scheme for Hong Kong residents diagnosed with COVID-19.

According to the new plan, the first 100,000 Hong Kong identity cardholders (aged between 18 to 65 and residing in Hong Kong) that register will receive a monthly benefit of HK$10,000 if they are diagnosed with COVID-19 and admitted to hospital in Hong Kong for COVID-19 treatment.

The service will be provided free of charge with no underwriting required. To alleviate financial stress, the benefit will be payable for three months and offer income protections to help cover living expenses.

“We understand that people may worry about losing their jobs or income if they are infected with COVID-19 and have to take significant time off work to recover. In order to support the Hong Kong public, Cigna is providing them with free coverage in the unfortunate event when they are hospitalised due to COVID-19, we will make three monthly cash payments to help take away some of their financial burdens so they can focus on their recovery," said Julian Mengual, CEO of Southeast Asia and regional health solutions at Cigna.

Prior to this, Cigna had already rolled out a series of special COVID-19 coverage measures. including extending the grace period for premium payments from 30 days to 90 days for policyholders of its medical reimbursement plans and prioritising the assessment of claims related to the treatment of COVID-19, as well as speeding up and simplifying general claim procedures.
