CelcomDigi looks to develop industrial extended reality solutions

CelcomDigi has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korean technology company VIRNECT which aims to develop and commercialise industrial extended reality (XR) solutions in Malaysia. Through its Innovation Center, CelcomDigi will collaborate with VIRNECT and XRA, VIRNECT's local partner and support team in Malaysia, to co-create industrial learning programmes that utilise metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions in higher learning institutions in Malaysia, according to a statement by the brand.

Idham Nawawi, CelcomDigi’s chief executive officer, said that he hopes the strategic collaboration will establish innovative and productive digital solutions for Malaysian enterprises to spur the nation’s digital ecosystem.
Communications and digital minister, Fahmi Fadzil also added that the collaboration will spur the adoption of 5G in Malaysia through the application of the metaverse and internet connectivity among consumers. Current 5G coverage in Malaysia has reached 68.8% while only 4.2% of users have utilised it, said Fahmi on Twitter as seen by A+M. The new solutions will be expected to change the learning methods in universities to experiential learning, especially in the fields of health, oil and gas engineering, robotics and cyber security, said Fahmi.
Malaysia has been ramping up its efforts for 5G coverage and aims to achieve 80% coverage in Malaysia by the end of 2023, according to Fahmi. Malaysian telecommunications company, Maxis’ subsidiary, Maxis Broadband also plans to execute the access agreement for Maxis to gain access to 5G products and services provided by Digital Nasional (DNB) as seen by A+M in a filing on Bursa Malaysia.
