Hong Kong athletes in the Olympic Games have gained citywide support. Given their performance this year, many brands have rolled out campaigns and promotions in line with their ins and also forked out rewards for the athletes themselves.
One such brand is Cathay Pacific, which announced yesterday that each Hong Kong medallist competing at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be gifted an unlimited number of business class flights for a year. On its Facebook page, Cathay Pacific said that to celebrate the success at Tokyo Olympics, the airline will be gifting each Hong Kong medallist an unlimited number of business class flights for one year starting from the date of the first flight to all Cathay Pacific destinations. Later, it added that the rewards will be extended to medallist competing at the Paralympic Games too.
Currently, only two Hong Kong athletes have won medals at the Olympic Games. Men’s foil fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long won gold last Monday after beating 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist Daniele Garozzo of Italy. Meanwhile, Siobhan Haughey won two silvers as she made Hong Kong's swimming team's history in the 200m freestyle race and 100 freestyle race.
A lot of brands, particularly public transport companies, have rolled out rewards to Hong Kong athletes previously. For example, MTR has also launched bespoke offers for Hong Kong athletes participating in the Olympic Games as every one of them will receive a ticket that offers them one-year free journeys. Meanwhile, MTR has also decided to offer Edgar Cheung and Siobhan Haughey a lifetime ticket that enables them to travel for free.
Also, bus company KMB will also give out one-year free rides to all members of the Hong Kong delegation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In a statement, KMB added that the company hoped all Hong Kong athletes will achieve even better results in the rest of the Olympic Games. In late July, all Hong Kong athletes competing in the Olympics will each get the naming rights of a KMB bus. A name tag with a detailed description for the naming will be installed at the front of the bus compartment to celebrate the athletes' fighting spirit and outstanding achievements.
KMB will also introduce Olympic-themed buses to operate around the city to share joy with the public and promote the Olympic spirit.
Also, according to several media reports, Hong Kong Tramways is planning to offer Hongkongers free tram rides for a week in August or September to celebrate the success. The company is also considering inviting athletes to have a parade in the city.
