Cathay Pacific dives deep into sustainability with creative woodcraft collection

Cathay Pacific has partnered with Hong Kong-based woodwork atelier Start From Zero to launch two products handcrafted from recycled wood, including a mahjong set and a special edition upcycled galley container, as part of Cathay's commitment to sustainability.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the partnership features an exquisite mahjong set and a special edition upcycled galley container - both made from recycled wood to capture the warmth and elegance of Cathay Pacific’s lounges. An embodiment of Cathay’s design ethos, the collection is especially designed to reflect the brand's refined lounge experience and add a warm touch to consumers' space.
As an often-seen item in Hong Kong homes, Cathay believes Mahjong can best best represent the local culture. The latest partnership features ornate Cathay Jade green-adorned tiles in an intricately designed wooden box, taking the inspiration from classic carved mahjong sets and features retro designs such as rounded corners and retractable openings.
Furthermore, the partnership also turns Cathay's in-flight galley containers into something special for aviation lovers, which is a unique memento of Cathay Pacific’s service. This aircraft essential – known in the industry as a KSSU container – has retired from the skies and been given a unique upgrade at the hands of Start From Zero. It now features three exquisitely crafted modular trays, which can be mixed and matched to offer flexible storage options, and a multi-purpose top, all created from recycled wood and featuring the carpenter’s signature pattern.
Commenting on the partnership, Dom Chan, founder of Start From Zero, said, “We look wooden furniture because wood is a material that transcends warmth. We often use recycled wood because aged wood actually offers more stability and will not deform easily.”
