The upcoming Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens have sold over 39.5k tickets, with less than 500 tickets left, according to its organiser Hong Kong China Rugby Union (HKCR).

HKCR said in a statement all remaining tickets are expected to be snapped up by fans within the next 24 hours. This weekend’s event will be the first sellout since the pandemic, it added.

This year’s event has seen a renewed interest amongst international visitors, with current overseas ticket sales returning to over 40% of totals in 2024, supported by strong uptake from the UK, Australia and Fiji. This figure is up from 23% in 2023 and 3% in 2022 during the pandemic.

The Hong Kong Sevens, which is marking its 47th year in history, will be held at the Hong Kong Stadium from 5 April 2024 until 7 April 2024. This will also be the last time the event is hosted at the iconic venue, as it will be relocated to the Kai Tak Sports Park starting next year. The event is awarded by the government as an “M” mark event, symbolising an intense, spectacular and signature event in the territory sports calendar.

This year’s entertainment and music line-up includes bands and singers from all over the world such as Jamaican reggae band The Wailers,  DJ James Haskell, Hong Kong singer Celine Tam and Lollytalk. The game has also invited the Taiwanese cheerleading squad, the Rakuten Girls, to send a team of eight to make a tournament debut.

Chris Brooke, chairman, Hong Kong China Rugby, said: “This is a very special year for the tournament as we mark three decades inside the Hong Kong Stadium, and we are overwhelmed at the response of the fans to this milestone year and hopeful of recording our first full house since the pandemic. With the rugby as riveting as ever, Hong Kong is set to once again thrill the 120,000 visitors over the coming three days with another weekend of world-class rugby revelry.”

Don't miss: Cathay's campaign highlights unforgettable thrill of Hong Kong Sevens

As an official sponsor of the upcoming Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, Cathay has launched a campaign that aims to get people excited about this year’s event and Cathay’s travel packages by showing that "Nobody does rugby like Hong Kong".

Done in collaboration with creative agency Publicis Groupe Hong Kong, the launch film "That's what we call a seven" documents the life of Eric, who starts rating his everyday experiences and is shocked to realise that nothing lives up to the exhilaration he once felt at the Hong Kong Sevens – life hasn’t been the same ever since.

The video also aims to present the message that nothing beats the action of everyone’s favourite party, which is the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, not lobster dinners, not guitar solos, not even triple rainbows.
