Bridge Data Centres (BDC), the subsidiary of Chindata in Southeast Asia, has acquired new land in Selangor for the development of its third data centre, MY02, in Cyberjaya, Malaysia as it expands its presence in Malaysia.

The expansion is in partnership with Cyberview and is estimated to be the largest among the three data centre developments that include MY01 in Cyberjaya and MY03 in Bukit Jalil, according to statement by the company.

The project is expected to increase IT capacity by approximately 87 MW across three phases with the first two phases involving the construction of a three-storey data centre.

“This ongoing investment underscores BDC's confidence in Malaysia, reinforcing our role as a regional data centre hub,” said Wira Arham Abdul Rahman, CEO of Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

“Aligned with the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, BDC's commitment contributes to the nation's sustainable economic growth, creation of high-skilled jobs for locals, and propels the digital transformation journey,” he added.

BDC also promises to provide a deeply integrated and mission-critical infrastructure, prioritise efficiency, and cost-effectiveness with its cooling technology.

“MDEC as the nation's digital IPA fully supports such collaborations, and this perfectly aligns with MDEC's Malaysia Digital (MD) in driving the nation's digital economy,” added Mahadhir Aziz, chief executive officer of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

The investment in BDC’s new centre is expected to help invigorate the growth of ancillary businesses and spark innovation across various industries as a pivotal step towards sustainable growth, job creation, and a thriving, high-skilled workforce.

"Our ongoing expansion in Malaysia underscores our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers and further solidifying our position as a key player in the data centre industry,” said Eric Fan, president at Bridge Data Centres.

“With this latest development in Cyberjaya, we are poised to continue driving innovation and supporting the digital transformation of businesses across the nation,” he explained.

In 2023, Cyberjaya saw an increase in data centre investments, cementing its role as the global technology hub. The city is currently home to 15 commercial and captive data centres including hyperscale, as well as the location for 90% of Malaysia's co-location data centres, according to BDC.

As Malaysia aligns its efforts with NIMP 2030, NTT Global Data Centres Corporation, a subsidiary of IT infrastructure and services company, NTT, launched its sixth data centre in Cyberjaya 6 (CBJ6) on NTT’s Cyberjaya campus last year.

The facility involves an investment of over RM234 million and aligns with Malaysia's digital growth vision, aiming for Malaysia to be an ‘Asian Digital Tiger’ by 2025, according to a statement by the company.
