Brands in Malaysia rallied to celebrate the golden feat of national powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin when he recently clinched the nation's first gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Multiple media outlets also said he broke the Paralympics powerlifting record of 227kg set by Iraq's Rasool Mohsin in 2016 when he eventually lifted 230kg. From Burger King Malaysia and Digi to Marrybrown and Petron, several brands shared their well wishes on social media. Media outlets such as Astro Arena and HITZ FM also congratulated Gustin on his win.

Besides customising a post for Gustin, Burger King decided to spice it up a little by swapping out the "O" in "Congrats!" with its beloved onion rings.

Meanwhile, Digi took things up a notch by creating a short video about Malaysia's hero powerlifters. It gave a shoutout to Siow Lee Chan who was the first nation's first female athlete to win a Paralympic medal. It then added that Gustin's record of 230kg is akin to lifting two Malayan Tigers.

Separately, the Malaysian Paralympics contingent recently received a shoutout from the official Tokyo 2020 account for its stunning opening ceremony outfit. Created by the fashion design department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Ruslan Abdul Rahim, professor and dean, faculty of art and design told A+M previously that the selected design was inspired by Hang Tuah. He explained that the outfit is a contemporary adaptation and presentation of traditional motifs while retaining the essence of the Jalur Gemilang.

The Paralympic Games began on 24 August and brands including Sunway Putra Mall, Petron Malaysia and Secret Recipe hyped up the games by sharing more about the national athletes in action and also wished them well on social media.
