BMW Group's head of marketing communications, Koo Sok Hoon, has stepped down after just under nine years in the role, according to Koo when MARKETING-INTERACTIVE reached out.

Koo joined the German automaker in 2015 as its marketing communications manager. In the role, she worked on multiple campaigns particularly surrounding the launch of the BMW 5 series.

In June 2022, Koo was promoted to head of marketing communications under BMW Group Asia. In the role, Koo oversaw the marketing communications and brand management of BMW in 12 regional markets, with key focus in Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam.

She also led strategic brand collaborations and partnerships and was responsible for media strategies in Singapore, according to her LinkedIn page.

"I believe that in these ever-changing times, it is important to grow and challenge myself with new opportunities. Having been with BMW for close to nine years, it is a privilege to have been involved in the marketing of an iconic brand and witnessed its growth in the region," said Koo to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE.

"None of this would have been possible without the unwavering passion and teamwork of my colleagues, who shared a common vision for BMW's success in the region. I'm proud to have been a part of this amazing team," she added in a LinkedIn update.

Prior to her stint at BMW Group, Koo was communications manager at luxury fashion brand Gucci, a role she held for just under two years. She has also held leading marketing roles in brands such as Breitling, Fairmont Singapore and Swissotel Merchant Court Singapore.

MARKETING-INTERACTIVE understands that Koo will be moving into the luxury travel industry where she will take on the role of marketing communications director in a regional role covering Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and India.

The news comes shortly after BMW group has appointed Publicis Groupe’s media agency, Starcom, as its new media agency of recordin Indonesia. It has also renewed its media agency contract with Starcom in both its China and Singapore markets in tandem. These wins follow a regional media review by BMW Group that began early in 2023.

As the media agency of record in these markets, Starcom will take charge of strategic planning, media buying and business transformation for all of BMW Group’s most iconic brands, including BMW and MINI.
