Apple has planned to invest over US$250 million to expand its campus in Ang Mo Kio as it aims to create more jobs, deepen its connections with the local community and provide a space for growth and new roles in AI along with other key functions.

Singapore is currently the central operations center for Apple in the region and is a hub for critical roles in software, hardware, services, and support.

“Singapore is truly a one-of-a-kind place, and we are proud of the connection we’ve built with this dynamic community of creators, learners, and dreamers,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“With our growing campus, Apple is writing a new chapter in our history here. Our Singapore teams have played an important role in enriching the lives of our customers — and we can’t wait for many more decades of innovation to come,” he added.

The Ang Mo Kio facility was opened in 1981 with 72 employees focused on Apple II and has since grown to include a team of more than 3,600 employees.

Construction is expected to begin later this year and will see the two buildings acquired in 2022, located adjacent to the company’s existing offices and upgraded to foster greater collaboration for Apple’s growing teams.

The expanded campus will also run on 100 percent renewable energy and when completed, the office aims to attain LEED Gold certification, according to a statement by the company.

Apple appears to be ramping up its presence in Southeast Asia as it will reportedly look into building a manufacturing facility in Indonesia, according to CEO Tim Cook after his meeting with Indonesia president Joko Widodo.

The CEO of the tech giant arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday after visiting Vietnam and reportedly told media of the president's desire to see manufacturing in the country.
