Alipay+ and five other digital payment apps including Alipay, MPay, Truemoney and Touch’n Go eWallet have partnered with Korea Easy Payment Foundation, the official operator of Zeropay. The partnership is aimed at launching Alipay+ globally to offer cross-border digital payments and marketing solutions to travellers. The partnership allows tourists to shop cashless at over 1.7 million merchants in Korea.

ZeroPay is South Korea’s public QR-code-based digital payment service introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and is designed to help small businesses enable free settlement for merchants and digital payments through eWallets for consumers. Starting from 1 September 2023, the users of the payment apps can scan the ZeroPay QR placed at the merchant’s counter with home eWallet apps, enter the amount of payment and confirm the transaction.

“We’ve been striving to enhance the convenience of seamless payment services for Asian tourists visiting South Korea by connecting Korean merchants with a variety of mobile payment methods that customers are most familiar and comfortable with,” said Danny Chung, general manager of Ant Group in Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

“By partnering with ZeroPay, we are looking forward to driving more growth opportunities for local businesses and together playing a share to further solidify Korea’s position as one of the most popular destinations with its unique offerings and convenient experience,” Chung added.

"Through providing this service, we will help to revitalise inbound travel, which was dampened by the pandemic, creating an environment where more overseas tourists can pay with convenience in Korea,” said Hanyong Lee, CEO of ICB.

Recently, Alipay has partnered with international card networks such as Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and Discover Global Network to launch a campaign that aimed to further enhance international visitors’ mobile payment and travel experiences. This comes as the country counts down to the Asian Games, which will be held from 23 September 2023 to 8 October 2023 in Hangzhou, China.

Running from 25 August 2023 to 29 August 2023, the partnership will allow tourists to get a discount when making payments with an Alipay account. The account has to be linked to an international card of one of the four approved international card networks within the Alipay merchant network during the Asian Games.
