AirAsia has joined forces with Malaysian indie synth-pop artist Sam Lopez to commemorate ASEAN day and to take guests on an audio journey through Southeast Asia.

Titled ‘Sounds of ASEAN’, the audiovisual music project features a line-up of tracks with five songs from five cities - Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila and Singapore, wherein each track is based on field recordings and features audio bites from these destinations.

Lopez was enlisted to visit these cities, mingling with locals, embarking on adventures as well as capturing the sounds and sampling various aspects of ASEAN along the way.

Rudy Khaw, CEO of airasia, said that Lopez’s music features bright and clean sounds and that it is created with sound sampling. “We knew right away that we had to get him tow or with us on this project. We’ve always been passionate about supporting local talent, and Lopez has really managed to bring each city to life with Sounds of ASEAN,” he added.

Inspired by the heritage buildings, hawkers, jeepneys and tuk-tuks, train announcements, temple bells and more, Lopez created the Sounds of Asean for airasia, an audiovisual experience which brings the listener closer to ASEAN, allowing them to immerse themselves in the region’s rich, intricate tapestry. According to AirAsia, the project features a full playlist and an upcoming travelogue series on Lopez’s guide to his favourite places in each of these cities.

“Bangkok is one of my favourite cities, I call Kuala Lumpur home, Singapore is just so well-planned and walkable. I love Jakarta’s music scene, and this project also brought me to Manila for the first time. Before this project, I’d never thought about how different yet ‘same same’ we are in Southeast Asia, and it’s been fun to work on this project and come up with these tracks. I hope the vibes of each city inspire more people to get out there and explore the world,” said Lopez about the project.

Earlier this month, AirAsia relaunched its 2019 'Holiday Quickies' travel campaign and renamed it to 'YASSS to Holiday Quickies' as it looks to reignite the spirit of wanderlust and adventure in Singaporeans when they scream 'YASSS'. On Clear Channel Singapore's outdoor digital advertising screen at Plaza Singapura, participants who screamed 'YASSS' for 10 seconds could stand a chance to win free flights.

The voice activation game is called PlayLive and is an interactive out-of-home element that engages its participants while also reinforcing AirAsia as a lifestyle brand, according to a statement by the brand. The launch day saw over 40 free flights to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand being given away with all expenses paid holiday quickies sponsored by Sabah Tourism and its partners as well as Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore who sponsored accommodations in Sarawak.
