AIA Group's Board of Directors has appointed Mari Elka Pangestu (pictured left) and Ong Chong Tee (pictured right) as independent non-executive directors (INED) and members of the nomination committee of the company, both with effect from 1 July.
Within their new roles, both Pangestu and Tee will report to Edmund Tse, AIA Group Chairman. Prior to her new role, Pangestu was World Bank’s managing director of development policy and partnerships recently.
Meanwhile, Ong currently serves as the chairman of the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority in Singapore. He has gained 35 years of experience with the Monetary Authority of Singapore in the areas of reserve management, monetary policy, investment management, financial development and financial supervision.
On the other hand, Swee-Lian Teo will retire as an INED with effect from 1 September. Upon her retirement, Teo will also cease to be the chairman of the risk committee and a member of the nomination committee. AIA INED, Chow Chung Kong, has been appointed as the chairman of the risk committee of the company with effect from 1 September.
Commenting on the appointments, Tse said, “I am delighted that Pangestu and Tee have joined our board. They each bring a wealth of international experience across a range of subjects that will add meaningfully to our already deeply experienced Board.”
Meanwhile, Lee Yuan Siong, AIA Group executive director and group chief executive, appreciates the work of Teo in AIA, “I know that I join Tse, my fellow board members, and our senior leadership team in expressing our deep gratitude to Teo for her leadership and significant contributions to AIA over the last eight years. She has been a highly valued advisor to our executive team and played an instrumental role in supporting our board.”
Don't miss: AIA appoints Harry Kane as brand ambassador
Back in January, AIA appointed Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur striker and England captain, as its brand ambassador. This came as both AIA and Kane share a desire to address mental health and resilience, according to a release from the company.
Through the partnership, AIA will collaborate with the Harry Kane Foundation (HKF) to champion the importance of health and mental wellbeing. This campaign will commence with Harry Kane’s self-produced animation entitled “Harry Kane: Resilience” to promote the importance of positive thinking, self-belief and having the support of others.
