A.S. Watson Group has announced its 2030 Sustainability Vision with the aim of make the world a better place to live.
The vision consists of four aspects to promote social and environmental sustainability, namely energy, greenhouse gas, plastic and community. The group is aimed at achieving electricity intensity reduction by 30% against 2015 baseline by 2030 and reducing scope one and two greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2015 baseline by 2030.
Scope one emissions are all direct emissions from the activities of an organisation or under their control, including fuel combustion on site such as gas boilers, fleet vehicles and air-conditioning leaks, while scope two emissions are indirect emissions from electricity purchased and used by the organisation. When it comes to plastic, the group is planning to eliminate unnecessary packaging by 2030, avoiding over-packaging and phasing out PVC. Also, it is planning to use recycled plastic content in 20% of the packaging of its products. As for the community part, through the "Give a Smile" campaign, the group targets to offer 10,000 free surgeries to kids with cleft lips and palates by 2030.
"Our planet is reaching its limits and millions of people’s lives are impacted by extreme climate and serious pollution. The A.S. Watson 2030 Sustainability Vision is a promise we pledge to our planet and community to make the world a better place to live," said Malina Ngai, group COO of A.S. Watson Group and CEO of A.S. Watson (Asia & Europe).
Some retail brands within the group will also roll out initiatives to help create a better world. For example, Watsons will kick off “Look Good. Do Good. Feel Great.”, a regional earth day programme in April. It also plans to establish green classrooms to raise awareness and foster sustainable lifestyle, while creating open collaboration by providing sustainable product choices to customers.
Meanwhile, Watsons Water has become the first beverage manufacturer to use 100% recycled PET material for bottles and introduce reverse vending machines in Hong Kong and is aiming at collecting an equivalent of 100% of plastics it produces, and replace at least 30% of the current packaging with higher recyclability by 2030. The brand will also launch refillable bottles made with aluminium to further catalyse the circular economy.
