Malaysia to work with scientists to improve the image of palm oil

Malaysia is reportedly looking to improve its palm oil image internationally by working with foreign experts.

The decision is expected to counter negative perceptions of palm oil through neutral opinions, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Fadillah Yusof, as reported by Bernama.

As palm oil contains benefits such as Vitamin E and antioxidant properties, its benefits are not being publicised widely enough, explained DPM Fadillah.

He also said that the government is looking to find neutral parties such as foreign scientists to confirm these benefits and help market palm oil products. Statements from these scientists could then be disseminated through electronic publications or social media.

The marketing programme for palm oil has also been broadened to new markets such as Saudi Arabia which saw increased exports of Malaysia’s palm oil. The ministry will also be ramping up efforts to promote the benefits of palm oil in various languages on social media, he reportedly added.

This comes as the Malaysian government looks to make major changes not just economically but also with its people and the relationships being formed on the ground. In a bid to foster wisdom in everyday speech and encourage more civilised interaction in Malaysia, the Ministry of National Unity recently launched a #cakapbaikbaik (speak good things) campaign, according to a statement by the ministry.

Through the campaign, Malaysians were urged to reflect on how they interact with people in their daily lives in the real or virtual world. They were encouraged to place special attention on how they could respect the different viewpoints of others.
