Malaysia’s minister for communications and digital, Fahmi Fadzil, has reportedly called for local businesses to adopt 5G technology as digitalisation continues to grow globally.
The minister reportedly warned that those who do not adopt 5G technology risk being left behind, as 5G plays a key role in other developed countries around the world, according to The Star.

Minister Fahmi made these comments at the CelcomDigi MY5G Conference and Tech Showcase 2023 where he added that other countries have implemented 5G technology and solutions across their industries to positive outcomes.
Citing a recent study by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), he identified five key components needed for a digital nation - infrastructure, innovation, data governance, security and people.
He noted that these key components are interconnected and must be developed together to avoid potentially costly gaps and delays during the implementation or distribution of 5G.
He encouraged all enterprises to take this opportunity to find new solutions and advanced technologies that will drive the next phase of development for their businesses.
Current uses of 5G in Malaysia include industrial training, EV recharging ecosystems, robotics, business support systems, traffic management and surveillance systems, health services and many others.
In August 2023, Minister Fahmi said in a speech that Malaysia is entering its golden digital decade and that the country is focusing on strengthening its 5G infrastructure. He added that the country would be developing new and innovative 5G services, such as through support from telecommunications company, Ericsson.
5G has been a focal point of conversation in the digital space in Malaysia, with Minister Fahmi placing much focus on the country’s 5G capabilities. He added in his speech earlier this year, as reported by Bernama, that Malaysia’s 5G network coverage is now at 64.7% of populated areas, with 5289 5G towers built nationwide as of the end June this year.
A+M has reached out to the ministry for further comment.
