12 April Fool's Day posts we loved from Malaysian brands this year

Despite falling on the second day of Hari Raya, several brands in Malaysia have not missed the opportunity to roll out their April Fool’s campaigns this year. While some have chosen to steer clear of jokes out of respect for the holiday, others have cleverly combined both celebrations in a fun and lighthearted way.

Taking center stage, this April Fool's Day are Malaysian F&B brands with hilarious product launches that A+M definitely won't be rushing to try. Other brands have also pulled a leg or two on social media. While still early, these are some of the most interesting April Fool's campaigns we have seen in Malaysia this year.

Don't miss: 10 posts that bamboozled us this April Fool's Day

1. Beutea Malaysia

Beutea Malaysia has teased a bitter melon coriander tea as a “limited time new launch” for April 1st. Some netizens seemed excited, and asked why the drink couldn’t be found on Beutea’s app. Coriander has long been the subject of fake product releases on April Fool’s Day, due its divisive nature and strong flavour, making it the perfect candidate for an exaggerated product.

2. BHC Chicken Malaysia

This one doesn’t seem too far-fetched. BHC Chicken Malaysia made a playful “announcement” about an upcoming release of strawberry fried chicken with chocolate dip. If it were real, it might actually have potential as an interesting product.

3. Famous Amos Malaysia

The cookie brand introduced glow-in-the-dark cookies to “light up” its customers’ midnight cravings. The post on Instagram featured a bowl of cookies with an exaggerated glow, making it easy to spot as an April Fool’s prank.

4. Family Mart

This one actually sounds pretty tempting. In celebration of Raya, Family Mart played along with April Fool’s by promoting a ketupat (leaf-wrapped rice cake) onigiri, and Tomyam keropok oden (oden-flavored crackers). The brand added a clever twist to the joke by referring to itself as “kedai keluarga,” which is the direct Malay translation of Family Mart.

5. K Fry Urban Korean

Yet another fried chicken brand has jumped onto the April Fool’s bandwagon. This time, K Fry Malaysia released a Raya special— spicy yangnyeom soonsal bingsoo. The fake product places its sweet and spicy fried chicken on top of a bed of shaved ice, topped with ice cream and green chilli peppers. In the caption of its post, K Fry said “some flavours aren’t meant to last forever”, and rightly so.

6. Lazada

This April Fool’s, Lazada Malaysia came in with the classic “couldn’t load image” post. While we didn’t tap to retry, Lazada took the opportunity to promote its 4.4 sale which is just around the corner.

7. NakNak Malaysia

The Korean fast-food restaurant pranked netizens by introducing a “pay per bite” payment option, at RM3 per bite. Nak Nak said it heard its customers’ intrusive thoughts, offering small eaters a way out of paying for a whole burger. This left netizens puzzled, with some asking what happens to the rest of the burger, in the post’s comments section.

8. Nando's Malaysia

Nando's Malaysia also joined in on the food-themed pranks this year, dropping its on Peri-Peri flavoured candy. "Lick at your own risk," the restaurant chain said in an Instagram post. The extra-hot candy also comes with a warning: "Not for the faint of mouth".

9. Over Malaysia

The hydration brand unveiled a self-filling bottle cap, which uses “revolutionary atmospheric aqua-tech", pulling moisture from the air and turns it into purified drinkable water. Available on April 1st, the bottle cap touts some too-good-to-be-true features, such as no refills needed, 0% battery use, powered by nature, and cold water straight from the sky. You nearly got us there, Over.

10. Sunquick Malaysia

This one is probably good for a dare, or for bamboozling your family at an open house. Sunquick has dropped its Durian Dream cordial, which features the “creamy, golden richness of Musang King”. It might be simply sedap (delicious), or simply yuck. We’ll stick to the orange flavour, please.

11. ZUS Coffee

Which new Coffizz flavour would you like this Raya? Lontong with nasi impit (rice cakes in soup), or rendang ayam (chicken stew) with chicken bits? ZUS Coffee has perfectly blended Raya with April Fool’s this year, with its new savoury and spicy 'Coffizz' flavours, catching netizens off guard.

12. 4Fingers Malaysia

Lastly, 4Fingers Malaysia has decided to put a nutty twist on its fan-favourite with its very own "kunafa chicken". In an Instagram post on April Fool's Day, the restaurant chain shared a photo of the item, served with a pistachio dipping sauce. Recently, restaurants and food brands have been releasing kunafa-inspired menus, after the food trend was sparked by FIX Dessert's kunafa chocolate bar. However, checks by A+M have found that the post has since been removed. Could this be because customers were actually asking for it in stores?
