WWF Hong Kong and Ogilvy & Mather have launched a plan to highlight the plight of Chinese White Dolphins - popularly known as pink dolphins - by nominating one into this year’s Miss Hong Kong Pageant.Weighing in at almost 250kg, Ruby, a Chinese White Dolphin from Tai O, will be the heaviest entrant and by far the most controversial.WWF will act as nominees for Ruby’s entry and the wildlife group is currently working with TVB, which runs the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, to seek approval.Over the weekend, the first stage of an online and social media campaign was launched with celebrities Karen Mok and Khalil Fong pushing their supporters to an online petition to lobby Miss Hong Kong Pageant and raise awareness of the critically endangered pink dolphin population.A dedicated mini-site and print advertising are slated for early July.Samantha Lee, senior marine conservation officer at WWF Hong Kong, said there are just 61 Chinese White Dolphins left in Hong Kong waters, compared to 158 10 years ago."Through her nomination into the pageant, we hope to raise mass awareness on the true beauty yet grave plight of the Chinese white dolphin as reclamation, increasing marine traffic and polluted waters rapidly contribute to the startling decline in their numbers,” she said.WWF said they were hoping 100,000 people will sign the petition.
