Viu inks deal with Wattpad to co-create content for multiple regions

PCCW Media Group’s OTT video service platform Viu has formed a partnership with global multiplatform company Wattpad, to produce Viu Original series and film projects based on Wattpad original stories.Leveraging the pursuit of online and self-created content by Generation Z and Millenials, this collaboration will see Viu transform Wattpad’s stories into different formats. Working with Wattpad’s technology to guide the development process, they will produce youth-oriented shows across markets including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, and South Africa.“Our message to the global entertainment industry is simple: great storytelling spans borders, languages, and genres. Viu understands the massive opportunities for tapping into global storytelling trends and bringing them to life in new formats,” said Dexter Ong, head of Asia for Wattpad Studios.Viu is the latest international entertainment company to strike a deal with Wattpad. Some of Wattpad’s other recent partners include Sony Pictures Television, Mediacorp, and Huayi Brothers Korea.“All over the world, millions of young people spend billions of minutes reading and writing every genre imaginable on Wattpad. We will continue to invest in original content to develop a sustainable ecosystem with local creators and providing them with a platform for their content,” said Helen Sou, senior vice president, digital media of PCCW Media Group.
