Shopee is looking to expand its work force in Malaysia as its parent company SEA Group announces plans to add more than 2,000 jobs, said International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said. According to a statement, the expansion into Malaysia will see the creation of cloud services, data hosting and processing, as well as a new logistics e-commerce warehouse. The targeted deadline for the new initiative is by 2024.

The minister added that SEA Groups expansion into Malaysia and its investment in the market showcases the confidence the group has in Malaysia as well as the “operational and policy stability of Malaysia's business landscape”. He added that the government is “expecting positive spill over effects” on SMEs, corporates and local communities.

"This is a significant development not just for Sea but for the local digital ecosystem. We are grateful for the support of the Minister of International Trade and Industry [and his team] for our expansion plans and business strategies. Our aim is to enable and support the growth of the overall ecosystem, empowering more players to benefit from the opportunities that this will create. We are also committed to supporting the creation of more employment opportunities that will drive Malaysia’s economic growth.” said Ye Gang, Sea’s co-founder & Group CCO.

Additionally, Shopee e-commerce platform will also expand its footprint in Malaysia through a newly-constructed mega warehouse located at Bukit Raja, Klang. The two-storey, 1.4-million square-foot warehouse is an integrated hi-tech logistics park equipped with cloud infrastructure. The warehouse will be among the biggest logistics warehouses in Malaysia.

Recently SEA Group chief Forrest Li said that the company has shifted its mindset and focus from growth to achieving self-sufficiency and profitability, without relying on any external funding. Under its eCommerce arm Shopee, the group has also shut many of its international offices with the most recent one being Poland

The group is also rumoured to be mulling the sale of Phoenix Labs, its developer based in Canada, according to reports on Bloomberg. According to reports, SEA Group is amidst talks with an advisor on the potential divestment.

Towards the tail end of September last year, Shopee Malaysia also reportedly made cuts to its Malaysia staff. This was alongside the cuts made to its Singapore, Indonesia and China offices.
