A Goodyear for drifting
- Goodyear sponsors Formula Drift 2009
- In line with brands commitment to motorsports
- Popularity of drifting high
Malaysia - Goodyear has told A+M this weekend's sponsorship of the Formula Drift Malaysia 2009 competition is part of the brand's commitment to promoting motorsports globally.
"Drifting is arguably the fastest growing motorsport in this region," Nasution Abdul Rahman (pictured), Goodyear Malaysia's managing director, said.
So popular, the iconic tyre brand is using the drifting tournament as a chance to get Goodyear closer to motoring enthusiasts.
"In Malaysia, this sport has immense potential in its appeal to our consumers, especially amongst the young and adventurous," Abdul Rahman said.
He said that Goodyear's legacy is derived from an association with different forms of racing all over the world for over 100 years and this has helped structure their rich heritage in the sport.
In recent times, drifting has been breaking into popular culture with The Fast and the Furious franchise even dedicating an entire movie to it. As a sport in SE Asia, its popularity even reached a point in Singapore which found the Singapore Traffic Police signing up as a major sponsor of the Formula DRIFT ProAm Series 2009.
Goodyear was also a sponsor of that series as was Nissan.
According to the brand, involvement in motorsports sparks more awareness and interest in its high-performance products.
